Bronze worm wheels, worm shafts and tooth re-cutting

Worm wheel and worm shaft sets manufactured or reconditioned to drawing or sample, including multi-start worms, ground finish and re-cutting of bronze worm wheel teeth.

What we do

Worm wheels and worm shafts

The worm wheel and worm shaft set is one of the company's historic specialities. We manufacture bronze worm wheels and their matching worm shafts, maintaining correct meshing between the two parts. We also re-cut the teeth of worn bronze worm wheels and machine worm shafts to sample or to the customer's dimensions.

When re-cutting, we machine all the teeth of the worm wheel to keep a uniform pitch between them and then manufacture the worm shaft to the resulting centre distance — which restores correct meshing to the set. When the worm wheel has been built up with weld, we first assess the hardness and distortion of the part, because hardened or distorted material can make re-cutting unfeasible or compromise operation.

We serve both single replacement parts for maintenance and special assemblies for equipment manufacturers, including multi-start configurations — we have already produced sets with up to 13 starts.

We manufacture parts with right and left hand of helix, helix angles up to 55 degrees, pressure angles from 14.5° to 30° and ZI, ZN, ZK and CAVEX geometries. A leading company in the lift sector approved 100% of the sets supplied.

  • Assessment of worm wheels built up with weldHardness and distortion checked before machining, with a distortion criterion in the range of 0.3 mm.
  • New worm shaft with controlled hardnessShaft manufactured free of distortion, with hardness around 27 HRC.
